Some students complain about about how far they have to go to train, others come
up with reasons why they can't train. We have 2 students, a mother and her son, that
travel 620 Miles to train. Any never once complains.
Sensei has always said... One good student makes it all worthwhile... Looking back you see people with a lot of different reasons and desires to join our karate family. A lot of people... as the path does get smaller and smaller as the rank goes up and up. The fascination; the desire; the heart grows dim. It's not in the glory or fame... It's in the heart and helping others... When I first met Nigel and Wanda Turk, the energy I felt... (The heart and desire with him) (The mom that wants her son to reach his desire to do karate) So the excitement in them both was so honest and true... just to train.... The energy that I felt as an instructor gave me that added desire to train harder; so I can show them the very best possible.. Nigel had that gleam in his eyes... (eager to learn) Which also inspires an instructor.... As time went on he had the heart, although 13 years old (seeming much older) reminding me as an instructor... "Things that really matter" It is always about "HEART". If you lose sight of that what do you have? Because that is the very reason you started and why you continue to train so hard.... Nigel compares karate to life. A great analogy... You get knocked down... but you have to get up. And what doesn't kill you... will only make you better. His view is from the heart -- and that's how he trains... As for his mom, Mrs. Wanda Turk, she kind of lives in a shadow of being "Nigel's Mom". But what makes it so awesome is the soft spoken character she holds. "You only know what you see as a child." You develop what your parents instill in you... so in short a lot of soft spokeness... her heart... and desire are the same... I believe in the beginning Wanda wanted to do karate and train to spend "extra time with her son." But her first visit with Sensei changed all that. Sensei has a way of bringing out the very best in people and making them believe in themselves when no one else does. He just has that way. He can take that little ole person so down on life and anything else and make them believe they can move any mountain and by the way "how many mountains do you wish to be moved"?? It's like he just knows. That's why he's Sensei..................... Honestly after that night doing karate was not for Nigel... It was for Wanda, even though she still was spending that "extra time with her son." But Wow oh Wow she was seeing how karate was a stepping stone for her also.....And now I see a stronger more confident person because of karate... Nigel and Wanda moved from Alabama to Illinois in June, 2007. But IKF and their karate family are important to them. They continue to train at home and come back to Albertville and Center Point every chance they get, even if it means making the 10 hour, 620 mile drive. It is a true honor to be able to call them "my students" It's almost like I have benefited as much as they have... It really is how karate is... This is the stuff people don't see in the movies or on T.V. Nigel and Wanda Turk are each....................... "A TRUE KARATE PERSON" Shihan Rachel Camp.
